Martin Down and Bentley Wood

After nearly 2 weeks of cloud and rain some decent sunshine at a week-end. Sunday the 28th I visited Martin Down but butterfly numbers were small: 5 Grizzled Skippers, 8 Small Blue, 8 Dingy Skipper, 1 Green-veined White, 2 Speckled Wood, and 3 Painted Ladys.

In Bentley Wood the day after, in the eastern clearing: only 5 Pearl-bordered Fritillary, 1 Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, 2 Speckled Wood and 7 Brimstone.

Noar Hill and Martin Down



5th May I visited Noar Hill in the morning after hearing Duke of Burgundys were on the wing. I had to wait until just 10 when they started to fly. All in all I saw 9, Here are a couple of pictures. Also there were 10 Orange Tip, 1 Holly Blue, 1 Peacock, 3 Red Admiral, 1 Brimstone and 1 Comma.

Had my first Turtle Dove of the year here flying around near the farm.

In the afternoon I visited Martin Down south section and Kitts Wood hoping to see Grizzled Skipper and Green Hairstreak. Brimstones were by far the commonest butterfly along with 5 Holly Blue, 9 Speckled Wood, 5 Orange Tip amongst others. I did however find 2 Grizzled Skippers and 1 Green Hairstreak. Here are the photos:



Also 2 Painted Ladys rapidly flew past.
